This study examines how the brain responds to alcohol and other substances, influencing behavior changes. By comparing individuals with different drinking habits, the research aims to understand how substance use affects social-emotional regulation in the brain.

The study would involve coming to OSU for at least 3 visits, including 2 visits during which you

will be given alcohol or placebo and undergo an MRI. These 2 visits will be about 8 hours each. 

Other visits can be done virtually via Microsoft Teams.

The eligibility is as follows:

  • ​Required to be ages 21-55

  • Physically healthy​

  • Consume more than 10 drinks/week​

  • No binge drinking episode in the past 3 months​

​

Compensation is up to $575, if you complete all study procedures.

This study investigates how to regulate aggressive behavior by examining the effects of Nitrous Oxide (N2O) on aggression. Since N2O is an FDA-approved drug that modulates glutamate—a neurotransmitter linked to aggression—this research aims to understand its potential role in controlling aggressive behavior.

The study will involve 7 visits, 4 of which involve coming to OSU on two sets of consecutive days during

which you will be given nitrous oxide (AKA “laughing gas”) or regular air (a placebo) on one day and then

a brain scan the next day. These four visits will be about two-hours each; the other 3 visits can be done remotely.

The eligibility is as follows:

  • ​Required to be ages 21-55

  • Physically healthy​

  • No current alcohol/drug use disorder​

  • 2 weeks free of antipsychotic medication​

​

Compensation is up to $540, if you complete all study procedures.

Effect of Pimavanserin on Aggression and Social Cognition

This study investigates whether Pimavanserin, a drug that blocks serotonin activity, can reduce aggressive behavior and improve social cognition in individuals with anger outbursts. Since no drugs are currently approved for treating anger outbursts, this research explores Pimavanserin’s potential effectiveness.

The study will involve 6 visits, 3 of which can be conducted remotely via Microsoft Teams. The other visits

will be done at OSU; this will include a medical clearance session that lasts about an hour and 2 visits

during which you will be given a study drug or placebo. These visits will last between 8-9 hours.

The eligibility is as follows:

  • Required to be ages 21-55

  • Physically healthy

  • No significant medical condition

  • No current treatment with opiates or agents that affect pain threshold

Compensation is up to $350 if you complete all study procedures.

This study examines whether an intervention that improves emotional regulation can help individuals with Type 2 Diabetes (T2D) better control their blood sugar levels. Since difficulty managing emotions may contribute to poor blood sugar control, this research aims to explore new ways to support T2D patients.

​

The research program we're setting up involves two (2) preparation sessions and ten (10) weekly 75-minute sessions, done in a group setting, over three to six months. One group will focus on managing emotions while the other will focus on heart health, in those with Type 2 Diabetes.

​

The eligibility is as follows:

  • Required to be ages 18 and up​

  • Diagnosed of Type 2 Diabetes

  • Hemoglobin A1C

Immune Challenged Study

The Lipopolysaccharide (LPS) study first aim is to show a “causal relationship” between proinflammatory cytokines and aggression in human subjects. If supported, this finding will provide a strong rationale for clinical trials of anti-inflammatory agents in aggressive individuals across several diagnostic groupings.

The second goal of this project is to evaluate the impact of cytokine (known for regulating inflammation in your body) levels on the function of cortico-limbic circuits related to impulsive aggression in "aggressive" individuals as opposed to "non-aggressive" individuals.

​​

The eligibility is as follows:

  • Required to be ages 18 and up​

  • Physically Healthy

  • No significant medical condition

  • No current treatment with opiates or agents that affect pain threshold

 

Compensation is up to $450, if you complete all study procedures.​

The specific aim of this project is identify the system neuroscience underpinnings of social-emotional information processing (SEIP), mindfulness, and impulsive aggression in order to empirically lay the foundation for the development of a social cognitive training program designed to remediate anomalies in SEIP and Mindfulness, and reduce impulsive aggressive behavior, in impulsively aggressive individuals.

The research program we're setting up involves various in-person & remote sessions. Transportation in in-person study is available based on certain criteria. 

​

The eligibility is as follows:

  • Required to be ages 21 - 55

  • Healthy or have at least one DSM-5 Disorder

  • Medically Stable

​

Compensation is up to $370, if you complete all study procedures.
